Lachlan Mitchell Named 2026 Wagga Young Citizen of the Year

South Wagga Rotary is incredibly proud to congratulate Lachlan Mitchell on being awarded Wagga Young Citizen of the Year at the 2026 Australia Day Awards Ceremony.

Lachlan’s award recognises his outstanding leadership, initiative and commitment to making a positive difference in our community. As the driving force behind the Wagga Youth Circular Lids Initiative, Lachlan has shown how young people can lead meaningful environmental action through creativity, education and hands-on engagement.

Through the initiative, Lachlan has worked alongside South Wagga Rotary and community partners to demonstrate how plastic lids can be collected, sorted and repurposed — turning waste into practical items while educating others about the importance of reducing landfill and embracing circular economy principles. Despite balancing a busy high school schedule, Lachlan continues to give his time generously, sharing his knowledge and inspiring others to take action.

The Australia Day Awards celebrate individuals who go above and beyond in service to their community, and Lachlan’s achievement is a testament to the impact young people can have when they are supported, encouraged and empowered.

South Wagga Rotary congratulates Lachlan on this well-deserved honour and looks forward to continuing to support his work and the growth of the Wagga Youth Circular Lids Initiative into the future.
