Youth Circular Lids Workshop
On Saturday 6 December, South Wagga Rotary hosted a hands-on Wagga Youth Circular Lids Initiative workshop at the Museum of the Riverina—an inspiring morning of learning, creativity and sustainability.
Participants discovered the important role everyday plastic lids can play in the circular economy. The session began with an introduction to the different types of plastic lids, how to identify them, and why correct sorting is essential for successful recycling and repurposing.
From there, everyone rolled up their sleeves:
Sorting stations gave students the chance to separate lids by type and colour.
Poster-making allowed participants to design educational visuals that will support future community-collection efforts.
At the shredding station, young recyclers fed lids into the shredder, watching them transform into colourful flakes ready for reuse.
Using our portable moulding equipment, students then melted and pressed the shredded plastic into carabiners, creating their own take-home item made entirely from recycled lids.
Between activities, participants also enjoyed some free play with the Museum’s jumbo foam blocks, adding an extra spark of fun and creativity to the morning.
This workshop was not only about recycling—it was about empowering young people to see themselves as part of a bigger solution. Every lid collected, sorted, and remade helps keep plastic out of landfill and supports a more sustainable Wagga.
A heartfelt thank you to the Museum of the Riverina for generously providing the space and supporting this community-led initiative. Their partnership makes it possible for us to deliver engaging, educational experiences for local youth.
South Wagga Rotary looks forward to continuing to grow the Wagga Youth Circular Lids Initiative in 2026 and welcoming even more young changemakers to future workshops!
